The immediate trigger is, undeniably, the escalation surrounding Iran. Higher oil and jet fuel costs are directly impacting airline operational expenses, a segment accounting for roughly 25% to 30% of their overall costs. As of this month, those prices have already jumped more than $2 per gallon – a trend that’s far from reversing.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby admitted to CBS News last month that the carrier had already implemented a 15% to 20% fare hike. Kayak’s data reveals a stark reality: domestic round-trip flights are up 18% – a hefty $55 increase compared to last year. International fares have seen a similar spike, with a $115 average jump on transatlantic journeys, pushing the cost to $1,064.

“Don’t wait, hoping that the fares are going to go down,” advised Henry Harteveldt, an airline industry analyst at Atmosphere Research Group. “They’re not.” The reality is that demand is predicted to remain high throughout the summer months, exacerbating the upward pressure on prices.

While some suggest delaying Travel to later in the season, when demand typically cools and jet fuel prices become more predictable, that strategy represents a considerable gamble. The underlying factors driving these increases – geopolitical instability and elevated fuel costs – aren’t likely to vanish overnight.

Beyond simply raising ticket prices, airlines are resorting to tactics like increasing baggage fees, a move primarily aimed at offsetting rising fuel expenses. United, for example, is already planning a 5% reduction in flight volume this summer, a clear indication of the financial pressures they’re facing.
