Scheffler's stunning 65 dashes hopes at masters

Scottie Scheffler's electrifying 65 on Saturday at Augusta National catapulted the 25-year-old Texan into contention at the Masters, leaving Rory McIlroy's 12-shot lead in tatters.

A stunning turnaround

Just hours earlier, Scheffler was watching McIlroy's dominant display on the big TVs in the locker room, seemingly resigned to a weekend of making up numbers. But the world No. 2's own even-par start sparked something, and Scheffler found himself in a zone that saw him card five birdies, an eagle and just one bogey.

From the long downhill 2nd, where his eagle putt dropped for six feet, to the 11th, where his approach from 200 yards curled around a bank and stopped eight feet from the pin, Scheffler's precision and bravery were on full display.

Even when he got a little thick with his approach at the 13th, leading to a mud ball in a greenside bunker, Scheffler refused to let it derail him, scrambling to a par and reeling off two more birdies, including a record-breaking 16th that could so easily have been a hole-in-one.
