Nationals top cubs in series opener with wiemer and ruiz home runs

Washington Nationals claimed a 6-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, securing a series win thanks to timely hitting and strong pitching. Joey Wiemer and Keibert Ruiz each blasted home runs, fueling the Nationals' offense.

Nationals start season strong

Jake Irvin pitched five innings for Washington, allowing two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts. Clayton Beeter closed out the game, earning the save. The Nationals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, capped by Wiemer's second homer of the season. Alex Bregman responded for the Cubs with two solo home runs, his first since joining the team as a free agent. Ian Happ also contributed a home run for Chicago.

Shota Imanaga took the loss for the Cubs, giving up six hits and four runs. The game also saw Winnipeg Jets forward Jonathan Toews throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
