Mariners snatch win from a's with late single, avoid sweep

In a nail-biting finish, Josh Naylor's game-ending single propelled the Seattle Mariners to a 5-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics, denying the visitors a three-game sweep.

Mariners capitalize on ninth-inning rally

With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Naylor lined a first-pitch cutter from Athletics reliever Joel Kuhnel into left field, scoring Cal Raleigh and securing the win for Seattle. The Athletics' seven-game road winning streak came to an abrupt end.

Naylor finished 3-for-5, raising his batting average to.194, while Raleigh also went 3-for-5 and is now batting.198. The duo's timely hitting made up for a shaky outing from Mariners starter Logan Gilbert, who gave up three runs in four innings.

Earlier, Raleigh had homered for the third time in as many games, a solo shot to right in the third inning, while Nick Kurtz tied the game in the top of the ninth with a 438-foot homer off Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz.

In other action, Julio Rodríguez extended his on-base streak to 19 games with a pair of singles, and Athletics starters Aaron Civale and Tyler Soderstrom drove in runs for their teams.

The Mariners will look to build on this momentum as they head to St. Louis to face the Cardinals, while the Athletics host the Texas Rangers for a weekend series.
