Speaking at his first press conference, Maresca paid tribute to Kevin Keegan and offered a warm message to his family, following the former Newcastle United manager's sad passing. Keegan, a former City boss who clashed with Sir Alex Ferguson during his time at Newcastle, was an obvious reference point for Maresca, who also name-dropped Ferguson alongside Arsène Wenger.
Maresca recognizes the elephant in the room – the daunting challenge of following a manager like Guardiola, who claimed 20 trophies in a decade. He acknowledged that history shows managers with long tenures often struggle after legendary predecessors like Ferguson and Wenger. However, Maresca remains confident in his ability to adapt and evolve to meet the demands of the job.
Experience and ambition
Maresca boasts an impressive résumé, having led Leicester City to the Championship title and Chelsea to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League, as well as winning the Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup. He has also been an assistant to Guardiola, helping the Spaniard win the treble in 2022-23.
Maresca's arrival at Manchester City comes with significant backing, including a reported £116 million signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. He's also eyeing Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi, who shone at the World Cup, to bolster the midfield. The new manager is keen to retain the services of star player Rodri, who lifted the World Cup with Spain and has a year left on his contract.
Maresca's next test will come during the pre-season tour of Asia, where City face Internazionale, K-League All Stars, and Atlético Madrid. He'll have a full squad to work with, including World Cup stars Joško Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic, and Abdukodir Khusanov, who will join the team shortly before the Community Shield against Arsenal.
