Benchwarmers turned champions: a 50-year friendship born on the court

Five decades ago, two Minnesota high school girls, Lisa Lissimore and Kathie Eiland Madison, boarded a bus to compete in history. The first-ever state tournament for girls' basketball was about to unfold, and their lives would never be the same.

Ice rink to court, a journey of friendship

Playing in the cavernous Met Center in Bloomington, where the Mall of America now stands, felt 'huge time' to the young athletes. Staying in hotels, traveling to games - it was all part of the surreal experience. 'We definitely wanted them to understand that you can do more than coach and you can do more than officiate,' Lissimore reflected.

What they found was a lifelong bond, forged through sweat and shared triumphs. 'You know, I tell people growing up, people always want to know why I never joined a sorority, and I said because my friendships are these women that are connecting through Sports,' Madison explained.

Four decades later, their friendship remains a testament to the transformative power of competitive team Sports. It's not just about the wins that matter, but the relationships that endure.
