Rare comet zipping through southern skies – a last chance glimpse

A long-period comet, C/2025 R3 PanSTARRS, is currently offering a fleeting spectacle to skywatchers in the Southern Hemisphere, a chance to witness its beauty before it vanishes from view for another 170,000 years.

A cosmic visitor from the oort cloud

Discovered in 2025, this celestial wanderer originated in the distant Oort Cloud – a vast reservoir of icy bodies surrounding the edge of our solar system. Its unexpected journey from the northern to the southern skies has created a unique opportunity for amateur and professional astronomers alike.

Astronomer Josh Aoraki, at Te Whatu Stardome in Auckland, New Zealand, notes that while the comet is reasonably bright, optimal viewing requires binoculars, a telescope, or a dedicated camera. “It’s not a naked-eye event,” he clarified, “but it’s surprisingly photographable – a welcome bonus for those eager to document this rare apparition.”

Over the next fortnight, the comet’s brightness will steadily diminish. Southern New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and the wider Pacific region should prioritize capturing the comet’s image as soon as possible. Aim for a clear western horizon shortly after sunset, when the comet will be low in the sky – approximately an hour after the sun dips below the horizon.

What you’ll likely see is a delicate blue-green coma – a temporary halo of gas surrounding the comet’s nucleus – and a trailing tail, resembling a smudged meteor. ‘You get the coma and the tail looking like a little fuzzy meteor in the sky,’ Aoraki explained.

The comet’s trajectory remains somewhat uncertain due to the ongoing process of mass loss as it orbits the sun. This can subtly alter its path, potentially bringing it back within 170,000 years, or even ejecting it entirely from our solar system. Predicting these long-term effects is notoriously difficult.
