A champion for justice and fairness

Riegle, who served in Congress for nearly three decades under seven presidents, died Friday of cardiac arrest at his home in San Diego. His family praised his tireless efforts to stand up for justice, economic opportunity, and fairness for all.

A native of Flint, Michigan, Riegle was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican in 1966 at age 28. He later switched to the Democratic Party in 1973 and won a seat in the U.S. Senate in 1976, serving until 1994.

During his time in office, Riegle championed causes like healthcare expansion and financial reforms. He was a vocal opponent of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which he believed cost Michigan jobs. Riegle also fought for Gulf War syndrome treatment for veterans.
