Trump Refuses to Commit to Pirro’s Removal
Speaking to NBC News, Trump stated he considered Pirro’s decision to dismiss vandalism charges against a former Olympian and three others regarding incidents at the pool a ‘terrible decision,’ though he declined to state definitively whether he would replace her. The comments followed a reportedly heated meeting in the Oval Office on Monday involving Trump, Pirro, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.
Pirro Attributes Damage to ‘Botched’ Renovation
Pirro’s office filed a 20-page court document arguing the damage to the pool’s concrete bottom was due to a “botched” renovation, not vandalism. This directly contradicts Trump’s assertion that the pool was targeted by vandals.
Heated Dispute Over Renovation and Charges
The controversy stems from a $15 million renovation of the reflecting pool, plagued by issues identified by the Justice Department as resulting from “flawed installation” by the contractor awarded a no-bid contract. Trump initially claimed attempts to vandalize the pool, leading to the charges against seven individuals, including former Olympic canoeist David Hearn, who faced a potential 10-year prison sentence and a $1,000 fine.
Hearn’s Legal Team Responds
Hearn’s lawyers argued the charges were baseless and an abuse of government power, demanding an apology from the administration. They have indicated they are exploring legal action, including civil suits, bar referrals for prosecutors, and requests for sanctions and reimbursement of legal fees. Attorney Steven Levin stated, ‘all options are on the table.’
Trump Accuses Pirro of ‘Choking’
Trump described Pirro’s actions as “choking” during a Monday Oval Office meeting, further highlighting his dissatisfaction with her handling of the situation. The Justice Department subsequently dismissed the charges against Hearn after the incident.
