San Bernardino County Man Killed After Shooting at Edison Workers
A 68-year-old man, identified as Paul Ronald Selby, was fatally shot by San Bernardino County deputies following an incident in Mentone, California, where he allegedly opened fire on Southern California Edison (SCE) employees working on a tree trimming project.
Shooting Occurred During Easement Work
Deputies responded to a call at a residence on King Street around 10:50 a.m. on Friday, reporting a man firing a weapon at SCE workers who were trimming trees within an easement on the property. The workers included contractors from ACE Tree Enterprises and Evergreen Traffic Control.

Suspect Refused to Surrender
Selby barricaded himself inside the home and refused to exit, according to the sheriff’s department. His wife, however, safely left the residence. Despite repeated attempts by deputies, including the deployment of chemical munitions, Selby continued to resist and fired at law enforcement, leading to a deputy-involved shooting.

Investigation Ongoing, No Deputies Injured
Selby was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies sustained injuries during the exchange of fire. SoCal Edison confirmed that the tree trimming was a scheduled project and that customers had been notified in advance. Five SCE employees and eight contractors were present at the time of the incident, and no one was injured during the initial gunfire. The investigation is ongoing, and the Sheriff’s Department is requesting anyone with further information to contact the Specialized Investigations Division at 909-890-4904.
