Convicted gunman faces up to 90 years in prison for nypd detective's fatal shooting

Guy Rivera, the man convicted of fatally shooting NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller during a traffic stop in 2024, is due in court for a sentencing hearing Monday.

Split verdict sparks disappointment amidst guilty count convictions

Rivera, 36, faces up to 90 years in prison after being found guilty of aggravated manslaughter, criminal possession of a weapon, and attempted murder for trying to shoot NYPD Sgt. Sasha Rosen, who was with Diller at the time.

However, the jury delivered a split verdict, finding Rivera not guilty of murder, the most serious charge.

Victim impact statements will be read at the hearing, which comes following a trial where the defense argued Rosen unintentionally caused the gun to go off when pulling Rivera from the vehicle.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch expressed disappointment in the verdict, saying while she's grateful for the convictions, she hopes the ultimate sentence reflects the gravity of Rivera's actions.
