Chicago police are investigating Alphanso Talley, 26, as the individual responsible for the shooting at Swedish Hospital on Saturday. His release in April 2025, initially under electronic monitoring and with expanded privileges – including permission to attend college – proved to be short-lived. Violations of curfew and missed court dates swiftly led to a revocation of his enhanced release terms.
A system under scrutiny
Ald. Anthony Napolitano, visibly frustrated, described the situation as a “failed system,” demanding accountability from the judiciary. “It’s flawed. It’s broken. It needs to end. It’s needs to end immediately,” he stated, emphasizing the urgent need to reassess the release practices that allowed Talley to return to the streets.
Prosecutors laid out a chilling timeline, beginning with an armed robbery at a Family Dollar in Albany Park. Surveillance footage shows Talley and an accomplice violently pistol-whipping an employee, stealing cash and valuables, and fleeing on scooters. Investigators utilized a GPS device attached to stolen items to track Talley to the hospital.
During the encounter at the hospital, Talley allegedly swallowed narcotics, prompting paramedics to transport him. However, as he was being examined – with his handcuffs removed – he pulled out a gun and opened fire on officers, resulting in Bartholomew’s death. The second officer remains in critical condition, with doctors stating his survival hinges on a “miracle.”
Federal charges loom
Adding another layer to the investigation, an Indiana woman, Olivia Burgos, has been arrested on federal charges in connection with the acquisition of the handgun used in the shooting.
