Firefighters battled the blaze for over an hour on Sunday night, responding to reports of the fire at 2:00 AM. Initial reports suggest a large number of partygoers and residents were safely evacuated from the Watling Street area, a testament to the swift action of staff and emergency responders. But the scene remains one of profound loss.
Frank McMahon, the club’s owner, expressed overwhelming relief that no lives were lost, stating, ‘Whilst I am devastated to say that the building itself has been completely destroyed, I am deeply relieved, grateful and proud to confirm that no staff or customers were harmed, and everybody went home safely.’ He described the club as ‘about people, not just bricks and mortar,’ a sentiment reflecting decades of community built within those walls.
Investigation underway – motive unknown
Police have arrested a 51-year-old man on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. While the investigation is ongoing, authorities are urging the public to refrain from speculation, emphasizing that it’s too early to determine the cause of the fire. Thames Valley Police Commander, Supt. Emma Baillie, stated, ‘It would be too early to comment on any particular motivation for this incident and we would respectfully ask for people not to speculate.’
