Couple rebuilds life after devastating fire, holds onto wedding album
After nearly two years
of heartache and rebuilding, Alvyn and Phyllis Nordquist are finally Home – a new structure rising from the ashes of the Mountain Fire that consumed their Camarillo neighborhood.A testament to resilience
The scars of November 2024 are still visible, but the spirit of the Nordquists is unbroken. Witnessing the devastation firsthand, Phyllis tearfully recounted, “When something happens like this, and God comes through like he did, you know you’re doing the right thing.” Alvyn, his voice steady, simply stated, “This feels like Home.”
Their 65-year marriage, rooted in 53 years within those same walls, was abruptly shattered. Yet, amidst the rubble, a single, unexpected miracle: their wedding album, miraculously spared by a standing bookshelf. “We were thrilled,” Alvyn exclaimed, gesturing to the photograph. “It’s a whole new beginning getting used to a whole new Home,” Phyllis added, a cautious optimism in her eyes.
A labor of love, built from the ground up
The rebuilding process, spearheaded by local builder Michael Llako, has been a grueling eight-month endeavor. “Our clients, 90 and 91 years old, lost everything,” Llako explained. “We started in July, and today, April 10th, we’ve completed this property.” He acknowledged the challenges – unforeseen material delays, logistical hurdles – but emphasized the profound nature of the project. “It’s been built from the ground up.”
Llako described the painstaking process, noting it wasn’t without its difficulties. The Nordquists’ new Home, while different, carries the same emotional weight, a tangible representation of their enduring love and the memories they've painstakingly preserved. The salvaged portraits of their children stand as a poignant symbol of their past and a hopeful beacon for their future – a marriage of memory and new beginnings.
