Sacramento stabbing: 21-year-old dies after downtown attack

A 21-year-old man from Stockton, Dustin DeWitt, died Monday night after being stabbed in downtown Sacramento, according to police. The incident, which occurred around 9:45 p.m. along K Street near the DOCO district, left a woman with serious injuries. The attack has left a community reeling and ignited calls for increased security.

Simple night out turns deadly

DeWitt, a recent college graduate and aspiring flight attendant, was meeting a friend visiting from San Diego when the double stabbing took place. His Family reported growing concern when he failed to return home, noting his phone's location showed him at DOCO for several hours prior to the attack. His mother, Sokha Hem, described her son as driven and hardworking, juggling multiple jobs including a position at Dutch Bros Coffee. "He had so much going on for him. He had goals," Hem said, adding that he was preparing for a flight attendant application and obtaining his passport.

Dutch Bros Coffee released a statement expressing their sadness, calling DeWitt a "cherished and loved" colleague whose presence significantly impacted their local shop.

The community is grappling with the incident. "This is supposed to be a safe place for everyone, and unfortunately, things like this happen," said Sacramento resident Erline Gray. She called for increased police presence and security measures in the area.

A vigil for DeWitt is planned for Wednesday at Nelson Park in Stockton. Police are urging anyone with information about the attack to come forward. As of now, a suspect has not been identified, and the motive remains unknown. The swiftness of the tragedy underscores the fragility of life and the enduring pain left behind.
