The sequence of events: a day’s argument turns deadly

Billops, known as “King” by his loved ones, was waiting for a CTA bus with his girlfriend around 3:30 p.m. on April 15 when gunfire erupted near 63rd Street and Stony Island Avenue. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead shortly after at the University of Chicago Medical Center. His girlfriend, also 16, was struck by a bullet but is expected to recover. According to Billops’ godmother, Janneil Stuttley, the Family believes the shooting stemmed from an argument earlier that day at Hyde Park Academy, reportedly concerning a vape pen.

“If that’s true, it’s just… unbelievable,” Stuttley stated, expressing frustration with the lack of arrests despite the Family’s understanding that the perpetrators are known. The complexities of juvenile law, requiring parental consent to speak with minors, are reportedly hindering the investigation, leaving Billops’ mother in a state of anguish.

Billops’ death marks the third tragedy involving Hyde Park Academy students since March 21st. Just weeks prior, 15-year-old Violet Harris was killed in a hit-and-run while riding a scooter in South Shore. Then, on March 30th, 18-year-old Lania Smith also succumbed to injuries sustained in a separate hit-and-run in Dolton. Remarkably, no arrests have been made in any of these cases, amplifying the sense of vulnerability in the community. The escalating violence raises serious questions about the safety protocols surrounding schools and the adequacy of responses to escalating tensions among young people.

Billops’ funeral is scheduled for next week, and a fundraiser has been established to assist his Family with the associated costs.
