Southeast michigan shaken by 2.9 magnitude quake near canadian border

A moderate earthquake struck the region bordering the United States and Canada on Sunday morning, causing tremors felt as far as Southeast Michigan.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the tremor occurred at 10:30 a.m. Eastern Time, with its epicenter located in the Big Creek area of Ontario, roughly 4 1/2 miles south/southeast of Amherstburg, Canada.

The quake's depth was approximately one mile, making it strong enough to register on seismographs but not powerful enough to cause significant destruction.

Residents in Trenton and Taylor, Michigan, were among those who reported feeling the quake, with some also noting the tremor in Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Erie.

This is not the first time the region has experienced seismic activity. A 3.7 magnitude earthquake hit Ontario on January 27, 2026, and was felt in Michigan. A 3.2 magnitude quake also occurred in Monroe County's Detroit Beach area on August 21, 2020, with impacts noticed across Metro Detroit.
