Take California’s almond industry, for example. Each February, more than 2 million bee colonies are trucked across the country, almost entirely to pollinate 1.4 million acres of almonds – a spectacle dubbed the ‘Super Bowl of beekeeping.’ This concentrated effort, however, creates a breeding ground for varroa mites and deadly diseases, spreading them between colonies like a silent epidemic.

The problem isn't just the almond bloom. Bees are exposed to agrochemicals – fungicides sprayed to protect crops – often without adequate warning about sublethal effects. Simultaneously, decades of grassland conversion for biofuel crops has decimated their natural foraging grounds, leaving them starved and weakened.

Adding insult to injury, the Trump administration’s decision to decommission the Beltsville Bee Research Lab, a 90-year-old institution offering critical support to beekeepers, represents a devastating blow. This lab provided invaluable disease detection and research, now lost to a system prioritizing short-term gains over long-term sustainability.

But the challenges extend beyond government policy. Cheap, imported honey has flooded the market, driving prices down and squeezing beekeepers’ profits. The loss of traditional honey sources – vital oases for bee populations – further exacerbates the crisis. We’re witnessing a domino effect, where the very system that relies on bees is systematically dismantling their ability to survive.

The consequences are stark: smaller harvests, higher food prices, and a drastically diminished produce aisle.
