From Brooklyn to Oregon, parents and child development experts are raising red flags about the rapid deployment of AI tools in classrooms, arguing that these technologies may be hindering, rather than helping, students’ learning. Kelly Clancy, a parent in New York City, recently clashed with a teacher over the use of Google Gemini, expressing worries that it encourages reliance on machines for critical thinking.

A national trend of caution
Clancy’s concerns are mirrored nationwide. In Bend, Oregon, over 1,100 parents signed a petition demanding the removal of generative AI from student devices, while Fairplay, a national advocacy group, called for a five-year moratorium on its use. The movement isn’t confined to grassroots efforts; even the American Federation of Teachers, the country’s second-largest teachers’ union, has accepted millions from tech giants like Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic – a move that’s fueling further debate.

The tech industry’s vision vs. parental concerns
Proponents of AI in Education, including First Lady Melania Trump, champion its potential to personalize learning and equip students with skills for a technologically driven future. However, critics argue that there's little empirical evidence to support these claims and that excessive screen time, coupled with AI tools, could be detrimental to children’s cognitive development. Jared Cooney Horvath, a neuroscientist, points to a 2025 study showing a correlation between increased AI reliance and reduced critical thinking skills in young adults.

Magicschool and the anthropomorphic challenge
Companies like MagicSchool are offering AI-powered platforms with features like character chatbots – Raina, a popular virtual assistant in New York City schools – promising to enhance engagement and differentiation. Yet, parents in Bend, Oregon, expressed concerns about students developing unhealthy attachments to these digital companions, leading the company to remove Raina’s persona. This illustrates a fundamental tension: While AI can provide tailored support, it risks blurring the lines between human interaction and technology.
Policy shifts and a call for guardrails
The backlash has prompted significant policy changes. New York City has scrapped its plans to build an AI-focused high school, and the school board has adopted a resolution to carefully evaluate the educational technology used in its schools. Even the American Federation of Teachers is advocating for a temporary ban on student-facing AI tools in elementary schools. Clancy now intends to share her advocacy tools with parents across the country.
Despite the growing skepticism, Bickerstaff, CEO of AI for Education, maintains that AI literacy training is crucial for equipping students with the skills they will need in the future. However, she concedes that a blanket moratorium may not be the most effective approach, and emphasizes the need for critical engagement with AI tools, not simply deferring to them.
