Critical minerals: the dark side of the green revolution
The rush to electrify the world is fueling a global scramble for lithium, cobalt, and nickel – minerals rapidly becoming the ‘oil of the 21st century’. But this seemingly green transition is leaving vulnerable communities scarred, exploited, and increasingly impoverished.

A resource race with human costs
A chilling report from the UN’s water thinktank reveals a stark reality: the demand for these vital components is draining water resources, eroding agriculture, and exposing populations to dangerous levels of heavy metal contamination. A staggering 456 billion liters of water were used in 2024 to extract just 240,000 tonnes of lithium – with virtually no benefit trickling back to the communities bearing the brunt of this extraction.
Kaveh Madani, director of UNU-INWEH, bluntly asks: “Can we truly call this transition ‘green’ or ‘clean’ when it’s actively harming people elsewhere?” The International Energy Agency’s figures confirm the explosive growth in demand, with lithium surging nearly 30% last year alone, driven by the electric vehicle boom and the insatiable appetite for high-performance computer chips.
But the devil lies in the details. While North America and Europe reap the benefits of reduced emissions, the environmental and health consequences are disproportionately borne by miners in Africa and Latin America. We’re talking about mountains of waste – enough to fill 59 million bin lorries – generated by the rare-earth industry in 2024. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, for instance, artisanal cobalt mining has contaminated rivers used for drinking, fishing, and irrigation in the Lualaba province, leading to widespread reproductive health problems among women who walk miles daily to collect water.
Abraham Nunbogu, lead author of the report, paints a devastating picture: “Some communities struggle, walking more than a mile to collect water, while others are being forced to abandon their homes, driving them deeper into poverty.” The situation is particularly dire in Bolivia’s Uyuni salt flats, where traditional agricultural economies are collapsing under the pressure of lithium extraction, and in Chile’s Atacama Desert, where vital lagoons are vanishing – threatening the livelihoods of Indigenous peoples who have called these arid ecosystems home for generations.
The report underscores an urgent need for radical change – moving beyond voluntary compliance to mandatory international standards for mineral sourcing. We need tighter controls on toxic waste, independent water monitoring, and legally binding regulations to protect vulnerable communities. The “Dubai of South America,” as one analyst aptly describes the lithium rush, is rapidly turning to dust. The pursuit of a greener future shouldn’t come at the expense of human dignity and environmental justice. The world needs to understand: the extraction boom is simply shifting the burden, not resolving it.”
Despite growing protests in Argentina and Chile – challenging lithium projects and demanding accountability – the underlying trends remain deeply troubling. The pressure to meet ambitious climate targets is fueling a relentless demand for critical minerals, and the consequences for those on the front lines are undeniable.
