The escalation: from traffic stop to interstate flight

The Castle Rock Police Department (CRPD) initiated a traffic stop around 6:45 p.m. on a vehicle displaying stolen license plates. Instead of complying, the driver reportedly accelerated into a dead-end neighborhood, prompting officers to adopt a less aggressive strategy. They chose to wait for the vehicle to exit the area and deploy a tire-deflation device, a calculated move to avoid a prolonged pursuit.

But the vehicle, despite the damaged tire, managed to re-enter I-25. The department stated officers did not actively pursue the suspects at this point, opting instead to allow the situation to unfold. It was then that the vehicle broke down on the interstate, triggering a chaotic scene as both occupants attempted to flee on foot.

Tragedy struck swiftly when one of the individuals was struck by a passing vehicle, sustaining life-threatening injuries. Castle Rock Fire Department personnel utilized a drone to locate the second suspect, who had reportedly bolted into a nearby residential area and attempted to conceal himself in bushes near a home.
