Bicyclist killed as suv plows through red light on chicago's southwest side

A deadly collision unfolded early Sunday morning in Chicago's Southwest Side when a sport-utility vehicle barreled through a red light, striking a bicyclist and a silver car.

At 1:20am, police rushed to the 6300 block of South Kedzie Avenue after the red SUV sped through the intersection with 63rd Street, where a 27-year-old cyclist had the right of way.

The force of the impact sent the bicyclist flying, leaving him severely injured on the pavement. The SUV also smashed into a silver sedan, which had a green light to proceed through the intersection.

In a shocking turn, the SUV driver abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot before police arrived, leaving behind a trail of devastation and a 22-year-old female passenger in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center.

Authorities are still piecing together the details, but one thing is clear: a senseless act of recklessness has claimed a life and left a community reeling.
