A skinny Peruvian street dog named Paddy nearly derailed a scientist’s life, forcing her to confront a decade of numbing routine and ultimately leading her to a passion for animal rescue.

Mirelle Radley’s meticulously planned South American adventure took an unexpected turn when a scrawny, lonely dog appeared outside her cabin in Ollantaytambo. He was a chaotic, joyful presence – a ‘feral goblin’ as she called him – with a startling, bear-like roar that instantly captivated her.

From biotech to book, driven by a dog

Before Paddy, Mirelle was trapped. Following the death of her brother, she’d fallen back into the sterile predictability of her biotech career, a cycle she’d desperately tried to avoid. Paddy’s exuberant energy shattered that inertia, providing the courage to quit her job and dedicate herself to helping other dogs in need. She co-authored a book documenting her journey, and now works with a Peruvian rescue organization, Colitas Con Canas.

Bureaucracy and a roaring rescue

The road to getting Paddy home wasn’t easy. Mirelle faced a labyrinth of paperwork, language barriers, and logistical nightmares, including a near-miss in Colombia and frustrating delays in France.
