Scotland notched up a landmark maiden World Cup victory, defeating Ireland by 40 runs in a tense encounter at the Women's T20 Championship.

Kathryn Bryce led the charge with a powerful 60 from 39 balls and sealed the win with a brilliant caught-and-bowled to dismiss Alana Dalzell in the first over of Ireland's chase.

For Kirstie Gordon, it was an emotional return to the Scotland fold after switching allegiance from England this year. She took three wickets, including a whisker away from a hat-trick, to drain the life from Ireland's pursuit.

Off-spinner Katherine Fraser chipped in with three wickets, including the key scalp of Gaby Lewis, stumped for 11, as Ireland crumbled to 121 all out in 19.1 overs.

Earlier, Scotland's total of 162 for five was built on a 106-run partnership between the Bryce sisters, who played to their strengths and hammered a six apiece over wide long-on.

Despite a slow outfield, Scotland looked set for a bigger total before Ireland staged a late rally, pulling back the hosts to 162.

In the end, however, Scotland's superior fielding and cohesion told the tale of a historic victory.
