La police fatally shoot dog during sun valley bomb squad callout

A dog was fatally shot by Los Angeles Police Department officers early Monday morning during an investigation into suspicious packages in the Sun Valley neighborhood.

According to LAPD Lt. Bruce Koss, police were conducting a traffic stop around 1am near Telfair Avenue and Penrose Street when they discovered the suspicious items. The officers requested assistance from the bomb squad and set up a perimeter while evacuating nearby residents.

During the evacuations, police encountered a 'vicious dog' that attacked one of the officers, leading them to fatally shoot the animal. The bitten officer was taken to the hospital for treatment, with their condition currently unknown.

The bomb squad has since rendered the explosive devices safe and remains on scene collecting evidence. One individual involved in the initial traffic stop is being held for further questioning.

Local streets will remain closed for the next couple of hours as the investigation unfolds.
