Al fayed scandal: 3 women questioned in uk sex abuse probe

Three women have been interviewed under caution in connection with a sprawling sexual abuse scandal linked to the late Mohamed Al Fayed, the former owner of Harrods. The Metropolitan Police say the investigation now encompasses 154 women alleged to have been victims of rape, sexual assault, or human trafficking over four decades.

The women, aged in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, were questioned within the last two weeks on suspicion of aiding and abetting rape and sexual assault, assisting in sexual offenses, and human trafficking for sexual exploitation. The allegations span from 1977 to 2014, with authorities suggesting around 400 offenses may have occurred.

The probe intensified following pressure from victim advocates, spurred by questions surrounding police handling of previous allegations against Al Fayed, who died in 2023 at age 94. Despite facing numerous accusations before his death, he never stood trial.

“Victims remain at the centre of this investigation,” stated Commander Angela Craggs of the Metropolitan Police. “While Mr. Al Fayed is no longer alive, we are determined to bring anyone suspected of playing a part in his offenses to justice.”

The investigation has examined over 50,000 pages of evidence, including victim statements and archived reports. Harrods has established a compensation scheme, receiving 180 claims as of March 31st.

The scale of the alleged abuse has prompted a renewed focus on the systemic failures that allowed Al Fayed, a man of considerable wealth and influence, to allegedly operate with impunity for so long. The focus now shifts to those who facilitated his actions.

The police are urging anyone with information, including those directly affected or with concerns about others, to contact them or Crimestoppers. The investigation underscores the enduring challenge of prosecuting historical sexual abuse cases and the long road to accountability.
